These incredible books display 118 engravings; one of Bartlett himself and 117 images that William Henry Bartlett depicted on his voyages to Niagara from Halifax between 1836-1838. Bartlett’s sepia wash drawings were copied and engraved by various engravers in London. The engravings were accompanied by text from Nathaniel Parker Willis and published here within. These books were published for the Proprietors by George Virtue in London, 26 Ivy Lane in 1842.
With brown leathered spines with raised bands and gold text, brown leathered corners, and black leathered fronts and backs, these books were once owned by W. E. Bessant, for whom there is a book plate in each of the volumes. They were also held by the Odd Book Store of 75 Madison Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, as can be seen in the sticker added on the front marbled pages.
Both volumes are in great condition inside. There is very little wear with minimal browning of the edges of the pages, as can be seen. The book covers are more worn with some of the leather wearing away, as can be seen. The books have been fully opened and the covers have only slightly come unglued from the pages, as can be seen. Everything is still fully intact in each of the volumes.
